I’ve had several clients reach out lately asking some version of the same question: “Sandy, how do I actually RELAX on vacation instead of running around like a chicken with my head cut off?” 😄 I get it!
It’s so easy to plan a beautiful trip and then forget that the whole point is to enjoy it once you’re there.
So today I wanted to share some of my go-to tips for keeping your actual vacation DAYS smooth and stress-free… not just the planning part, but the living-it part too!
Here’s what I mean:
- One late transfer can throw off your whole afternoon
- One overpacked day can leave everyone cranky by 3pm
- One “we’ll figure it out when we get there” moment can eat up an hour you didn’t have to spare
None of that has to happen to you. Let’s dig in!
Tip #1: Build in buffer time, ALWAYS
This is probably the single biggest thing I tell my clients. Whatever you think an activity, transfer, or excursion will take: add extra time to it. Traffic happens. Lines happen. Someone always needs one more bathroom stop.

When you build in buffer time between activities, one hiccup doesn’t turn into a domino effect that ruins the rest of your day.
Tip #2: Don’t over-schedule your days
I know, you want to see and do EVERYTHING. But a vacation day packed wall-to-wall with activities isn’t relaxing; it’s just a different kind of busy! Pick one or two “must-do” things per day and leave room to wander, rest, or change your mind.
Some of my clients’ favorite vacation memories happened on the unplanned afternoons.
Tip #3: Keep the essentials on YOU, not in your bag
Passport, ID, room key, a little cash, your phone: keep these on your person (a crossbody bag or a zipped pocket works great) rather than buried in a backpack you set down somewhere.

It sounds small, but it removes so much of that low-grade “wait, where did I put that” stress that can follow you all day.
Tip #4: Have a loose Plan B for weather or crowds
Especially if you’re headed somewhere with unpredictable weather or a big tourist draw, it helps to have one backup idea in your back pocket.
Doesn’t need to be detailed… just enough that “oh no, it’s raining” doesn’t turn into an hour of scrambling to figure out what to do instead.
Tip #5: Check in with your travel companions each morning
A quick “how’s everyone feeling, what sounds good today” conversation over breakfast can save you from pushing a tired kiddo (or spouse!) through an activity nobody’s really up for.
Vacations go so much smoother when everyone feels like they have a little bit of a say in the day.
Tip #6: Let go of the idea that you have to “get your money’s worth”
This one’s a mindset shift, but it’s important! If you paid for a resort with five pools and you only make it to two, that’s OKAY. If you booked a full-day excursion and want to bail after lunch to nap instead, that’s OKAY too. The goal is to enjoy YOUR vacation, not to check every box.

I hope these help you feel a little more at ease on your next trip! At the end of the day, the details matter, but they shouldn’t run the show — YOU should get to enjoy the vacation you worked hard to plan and pay for.
If you’d like help building a trip that’s designed with smooth, stress-free days baked right in from the start, I’d love to help you plan it!
